Attention: three reflections on the attention economy
May 8, 2024Nina Žnidaršič talked to Marko Miočić about her doctoral dissertation research on the autonomy of journalism and journalistic activity in the SFRY between 1963 and 1992. Her research involved interviews with 68 journalists who were formed during the SFRY, and focuses on their autonomous activities.
Journalists are often understood in uncritical terms: either they are a tool of power, using the media to create and impose their own truth on their subjects, or they are a critical opposition voice, pointing out the shortcomings and mistakes of the authorities to the people. Does this simple opposition need to be complicated? What were the specifics of journalistic work in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, as the country was called, from 1963 until its dissolution? What did it mean to be a journalist in Yugoslav socialism? How did the political changes in the country affect journalism and its autonomy?
