September 16, 2024Presentation at the International Conference on the New World Information and Communication Order
Center member Sašo Slaček attended the International Conference on the New World Information and Communication Order: Histories and Legacies at the University of Toronto. The conference brought together an international and diverse group of scholars to exchange research on the histories and legacies of the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO) – the first global movement fighting for the decolonization of information.
Sašo Slaček presented the results of his joint research with Alan Maričić, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, on the activities of the Yugoslav Institute of Journalism in training young journalists from the Global South. They have traced the evolution of the Institute’s activities from its early beginnings in the 1960s, through the heyday of NWICO in the 1970s, to the crisis period in the 1980s, when both Yugoslavia and the broader Non-Aligned Movement were in decline. The case of the Institute shows the central role of socialist Yugoslavia in building the “collective self-reliance” of the non-aligned countries, as well as the significant obstacles that the non-aligned countries faced as they attempted to free themselves from dependence on the rich countries of the Global North.
