The Social Communication Research Centre at the Faculty of Social Sciences warmly invites advanced MA and PhD students to participate in the 2025 Political Economies of the Media Summer School, scheduled from 9–12 September 2025 in the historic city of Šibenik, Croatia.

The Summer School offers a unique opportunity to engage with international experts in the field of political economy of communication. Course directors include renowned scholars such as Paško Bilić, Thomas Allmer, Benjamin Birkinbine, Jaka Primorac, Toni Prug, as well as Sašo Slaček Brlek and Jernej Amon Prodnik from our research centre.
Keynote Speakers:
- Mandy Tröger: A Walter Benjamin Fellow of the German Research Foundation at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Dr. Tröger’s research focuses on (digital) media markets and communication history, critical theory, and the transformation of media industries. She is renowned for her studies on the post-socialist transformation of the East German press and her journalistic contributions, including her role as a columnist for the Berliner Zeitung.
- Micky Lee: Professor of Communication, Journalism & Media at Suffolk University, Boston. A native of Hong Kong, Dr. Lee’s research intersects international communication; telecommunications, information, new information and communication technologies; and feminist political economy. She is the author of “Free Information? The Case against Google” and coauthor of “Understanding the Business of Global Media in the Digital Age.”

The course will be held at the newly renovated St. John’s Fortress, a UNESCO-listed site offering state-of-the-art facilities and breathtaking views of Šibenik. St. John’s Fortress in Šibenik, built in 1646, has been meticulously restored to serve as a modern educational campus. Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in academic discussions within this historic setting.
Application Details:
- Eligibility: Advanced MA and PhD students.
- Submission Requirements: Please submit your CV (maximum two pages), the title of your presentation, and an extended abstract (maximum two pages with references) by 1 April 2025 to political.economies.of.the.media@gmail.com.
- Notification of Acceptance: Applicants will be informed of acceptance by 1 May 2025.
- Course Fee: A registration fee of 60 EUR applies. A limited number of partial stipends and registration waivers are available; please indicate any need for financial support in your application.
- ECTS Credits: PhD students can earn 10 ECTS points upon course completion, which entails submitting a research paper, presenting it during the course, and full attendance throughout the program.
