Prof. Slavko Splichal, PhD.

Slavko Splichal is Professor of Communication and Public Opinion at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Social Sciences. His Ph.D. is in communication studies (Ljubljana University, 1979). His research focuses on public opinion and the public sphere, political communication, media politics, and communication research methodology.
He is fellow of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (2003), regular member of Academia Europaea (2018) and recipient of the Media and Democracy Karol Jakubowicz Award (2023) and numerous university and national awards for scientific excellence in Slovenia.
He is founder and director of the European Institute for Communication and Culture (EURICOM) and editor of its journal Javnost-The Public. He was a member of the International Council and Deputy Secretary General of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and Chair of the Advisory Board of the European Communication Research and Education Association ECREA.
He has been on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Journal of Communication, Journalism Studies, Gazette, New Media and Society and many others.
His bibliography includes twenty books and over two hundred book chapters and research articles in, among others, Big Data & Society, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies; Communications; Communication, Culture & Critique; Critical Review; European Journal of Commmunication; Gazette; Javnost—The Public, Journal of Communication, Media, Culture & Society, Review of Communication, and TripleC. His recent English-language books include Datafication of Public Opinion and the Public Sphere (Anthem Press, 2022), The Liquefaction of Publicness: Communication, Democracy and the Public Sphere in the Internet Age (editor, Routledge 2018), and Transnationalization of the Public Sphere and the Fate of the Public (Hampton 2012). In 2024, his latest Slovenian book Upodatkovanje javnosti in mnenjske tehnologije (Datafication of Publicness and Opining Technologies) was published jointly by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences.
