Professor Marko Robnik Šikonja, PhD in Computer Science and Informatics

Marko Robnik-Šikonja is a Professor of Computer Science and Informatics at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, and the Head of the Laboratory for Cognitive Modeling. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Informatics from the University of Ljubljana in 2001.
His research interests are based on knowledge extraction from data and the discovery of novel machine-learning methodologies to capture insights otherwise hidden from human perception. His research interests span machine learning, natural language processing, explainable artificial intelligence, network analysis, and their applications.
His most notable scientific results concern deep learning in natural language, feature evaluation, ensemble learning, predictive model explanation, information network analysis, and data generation. He is (co)author of more than 250 scientific publications that were cited more than 9,000 times. He is the author of several machine-learning software packages and language resources.
He is principal investigator or partner coordinator in several EU and national projects, e.g. Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Digital Humanities (EU HORIZON-CSA, Grant No. 101186647, 2025–2030), EMBEDDIA (EU H2020 no 825153, 2019–2022), PoVeJMo (ARIS, NOO 2023–2026), EMMA (ARIS, no. L2-50070, 2023–2026) and others.
He is an editorial board member of several SCI journals (e.g., Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Knowledge Discovery, Journal of Classification, etc.) and a program committee member of several renowned AI and NLP conferences, e.g., AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, ECML-PKDD, TSD, Slavic-NLP, SemEval, LREC, etc. For his work and achievements, he received several rewards.
